There were no surprises when the deadline passed Tuesday for turning in nomination papers to be Haverhill’s next state representative.
On the Democratic side are, in order of papers pulled, are City Councilor Andy Vargas, School Committeeman Paul A. Magliocchetti and Eva Montibello. The sole Republican in the race is School Committeeman Shaun P. Toohey. City Clerk Linda L. Koutoulas said all candidates turned in at the least the minimum number of signatures and all have been certified. Vargas issued a statement Tuesday, saying he had close to double the required certified signatures to be on the ballot for the Third Essex District special election.
“This campaign has never been about me,” he said. “It has and will continue to be about how we as a people can work together to tackle the real issues surrounding education, public safety, and economic development, in order to keep it moving forward.”
Meanwhile, Magliocchetti said he donated $1,100 to Haverhill schools for a new computer cart. His campaign said it is the latest of several contributions Magliocchetti has made by donating his School Committee salary.
“As a graduate, a parent and a School Committee Member, I know our educators do a tremendous job not only preparing our kids for the future, but dealing with a host of social problems,” said Magliocchetti. “They do this in spite of the continued decline in school funding which forces them to either use outdated equipment or none at all. This donation, I hope will, in some small part, help our teachers out and let them know that we support the incredible work they do each and every day.”
In a social media post, Montibello thanked her supporters Tuesday. “One thing you can count on—whether or not I win, I’m definitely going to be making a difference in Haverhill. I have a few projects that I’ve picked up while collecting signatures and a few calls to make on behalf of people!”
Democrats will narrow their choices to one during the state primary Tuesday, Oct. 10.
Magliocchetti plans a campaign kickoff Tuesday, Sept 5, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., at DiBurro’s, 887 Boston Road.
Vargas said he plans a campaign event Friday, Sept. 15, from 7 to 9 p.m., in the community room at Harbor Place apartments, 44 Merrimack St.
Toohey held his campaign kick-off Tuesday at Maria’s in downtown Haverhill. Lt. Gov. Karyn Polito was scheduled to be in attendance.
Not voting for a Republican, I have no idea who
Eva is or what she stands for, leaving Andy and Paul in my mind, for now. I strongly disliked Paul’s shady interview and answers in the valley patriot as well as his condescending tone towards Andy. Andy’s actual words were misconstrued and taken out of context, and I don’t blame him for fighting back. So Paul is out of consideration for me. I’ll learn more about Eva, but as of now, I’m voting for Andy.

If people think Haverhill is going to be okay with its representation on Beacon Hill you’re mistaken. Where is Haverhill’s other state rep…Linda Dean Campbell? She’s literally no where to be found. She hasn’t made one public statement assuring folks about anything. That’s a sure sign of a politician not wanting to put themselves on the line knowing full well what the future looks like.
Did you read the quote by Andy Vargas? Who talks like that? The race isn’t about him? Who’s it about then….all the criminal illegal invaders he warned that the Federal Government was in the city a few months back? Andy is a walking, talking sound bite. The kid is such a phony. Anyone interested in Haverhill’s future would be smart not to vote for Andy the talking head. Does anyone really think for a second that he would be taken seriously on Beacon Hill?
Andy Vargas’ tender age is showing…. Had to be the reason for his boastful comment. All I can say is —– WHO CARES?
He IS right, though, when he says, “This campaign has never been about me,” It is about electing a candidate who will consider the his voting base….. AND his voting base IS NOT ILLEGALS!
If Andy’s constituency is not illegals, who is it then? I’d be interested to hear who you think Andy represents.
Since being elected the amount of actions and statements by Andy that his main focus is the protection of illegal invaders in this city is overwhelming. None more so then when a young Spanish girl his own age got raped in a Haverhill city park by two illegals and Andy said and did nothing. If keeping quiet to protect two vicious criminal illegals over a young millennial woman of Spanish heritage doesn’t prove who he supports, nothing will.
