Haverhill Swears in Two Assistant Harbormasters

Haverhill has two new assistant harbormasters as of this morning.

Joseph Amore, an assistant harbormaster in Salisbury, and Michael S. McGonagle Jr., son of City Councilor Michael S. McGonagle, were sworn in this morning by City Clerk Linda L. Koutoulas in Fire Chief William F. Laliberty’s City Hall office.

“Amore has extensive knowledge of the river and extensive experience as assistant harbormaster in Salisbury and as a member of the U.S. Coast Guard auxiliary, he said. McGonagle, because he lives in Haverhill, is expected to be readily available in an emergency, the chief added. McGonagle will begin training for the position.

The part-time and as-needed assistant harbormasters will work under the direction of Harbormaster Michael Vets and use Vets’ boat, Laliberty said. He said the position are necessary because Vets cannot be expected to work around-the-clock, 365-days-a-year.

The additional harbormasters were included in this year’s new city budget, which went into effect July 1.

  1. Jack, that should be public information. I ma sure the Editor can find that out that specific info. Also, this issue would have had to have been brought before the council I would think, no ?

How much are these two guys getting paid? Are they getting city healthcare benefits too? Are they now members of the HFD union?

“Because he lives in the city” is his main qualification for getting hired? Bill, is that the best you could come up with to justify this obvious political hire? Like getting caught stealing from taxpayers, you’re not very good at public relations either.

    • Are you saying there shouldn’t be any assistant harbormasters ?? I hope not. One guy cannot be responsible around the clock with all the water that needs to be monitored.

      • I simply asked what the compensation is.

In the private sector that are lots of “on call” positions. Those jobs provide a very small stipend for being available during the times the employee’s services may be needed, and then a different rate of pay when the person is then called in to perform the duties of the job.

What do you think, Jack? Do you think these two jobs are structured this way? I personally doubt it. Especially when it comes to benefits outside of direct salary. These are hack jobs given out to the well connected.

        • I’m just happy the double tax (excise tax & waterway fee) us Haverhill boaters pay the city may be put to use. Also, can the city please fix the floating pieces of dock downtown. I do not understand why these are not set-up correctly. Thanks!

          • Chuck, call the harbormaster and voice your concern. Mike is a good guy and if something isn’t right he will fix it.
