Methuen, Whittier Tech and Georgetown Bus Routes Now Available

Throughout the month of August, WHAV provides a daily report counting down to the first day of school in Greater Haverhill.

Bus routes for the Georgetown and Methuen school districts and Whittier Regional Vocational Technical High School in Haverhill are now available on the schools’ respective websites.

Haverhill teachers begin a day earlier than the city’s students, when the entire district staff gathers to set the tone for the coming academic year. For the first time, this meeting will take place in a school building rather than a local function hall. Superintendent James F. Scully will lead the annual meeting on Monday morning, Aug. 28, in the multi-function room at the new Hunking School.

“For the first time, we have a place that’s big enough for everyone,” Scully said. The Hunking cafeteria-gymnasium combination holds 1,000 people.

Whittier Tech will host an athletics information night for parents on Tuesday, Sept. 5, from 5:30 to 6 p.m. for all student-athletes and their parents in the gymnasium. Whittier is located in Haverhill on Amesbury Line Road.

Methuen High School juniors and seniors will have the opportunity to participate in a new internship, established this year, with Methuen Community Television. A dozen students will be admitted to a Level 4, one-credit program led by MCTV Executive Director Karen Hayden, said Methuen Superintendent Judith A. Scannell. Students will travel to the MCTV studio from 1 to 2 p.m. on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

The Timberlane Regional High School Athletic Department will induct the 2017 Athletic Hall of Fame class on Wednesday, Sept. 20, at the Atkinson Country Club.

Inductees are Matthew Ceme, 2000; Renee Clavette Crawford, 2005; Jason Holder, 1998; Kadi Sickel, 2004; Matthew Smith, 2002; Dennis “Bucky” Tardif, coach and athletic director; Jason Vanderhoof, 1996; and the 1971 TRHS state championship baseball team.

Social hour begins at 6, dinner will be served at 6:30 and the induction ceremony is scheduled at 7:30.

Tickets are $40 each and are available at Timberlane High School, 36 Greenough Road in Plaistow, from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Past inductees and their families, as well as the general public, are welcome to attend, but seats are limited.

Haverhill Public Schools open their doors to students in grades 1 through 12 on Tuesday, Aug. 29. Kindergarten begins Sept. 5. All Haverhill students will attend for a half-day on Friday, Sept. 1, and enjoy a day off for Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 4.
