It will cost the city a little more than $9,000 to protect itself from the possibility that an employee in the Treasurer and Tax Collector’s Office could make off with residents’ tax payments.

In the wake of the alleged theft of cash and checks worth more than $33,000 by former city employee Dawn Marie Medford, city officials decided to install security cameras in the tax collector’s office.
City Council will be asked to approve the expenditure of $9,182 when it meets Tuesday, beginning at 7 p.m. in the Theodore A. Pelosi Jr. City Council Chambers on the second floor of City Hall. The meeting is open to the public.
In January, Haverhill Police charged Medford, 46, a resident of Haverhill’s Bradford section, with two counts of larceny over $250 and one count of larceny under $250. She was not charged with cashing any of the missing checks.
In addition to changing some of the procedures for tracking uncashed checks and other bank statement discrepancies, Mayor James J. Fiorentini said the installation of cameras will guard against a recurrence.
Also during Tuesday’s meeting, councilors will be asked to cancel their Oct. 10 meeting because of a conflict with the date of the special primary election to replace state Rep. Brian S. Dempsey, who resigned the 3rd Essex House seat representing Haverhill.
Potential candidates have until Aug. 29 to turn in nomination papers with the required number of certified signatures.
