Throughout the month of August, WHAV provides a daily report counting down to the first day of school in Greater Haverhill.

Haverhill High School is looking for a new associate principal. Kevin McLaughlin, the high school’s former assistant principal for Grade 10, held the No. 2 administrative position at HHS for the last two years. McLaughlin’s departure leaves two vacancies in high school leadership. School officials are also interviewing for someone to replace Grade 9 Assistant Principal Daniel Faircloth.

Homeroom lists for Haverhill’s Dr. Albert B. Consentino School will be posted to the school’s website on Friday, Aug. 25, by the end of the day.

An open house for grades 3 through 5 will be Monday, Aug. 28, from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Open house for grades 6 through 8 is Wednesday, Aug. 30, also from 4:30 to 6 p.m.

Official class schedules will be available to view on the School Brains online portal by the end of the day Aug. 25. Schedules may be posted before that time, but they will not be final until after 3 p.m. on the 25th.

Consentino School is at 658 Washington St. and serves students in kindergarten through grade 8.

Several new positions and staff changes are included in the 2017-2018 Pentucket Regional School District budget, according to Superintendent Jeffrey Mulqueen.

In the upcoming year, staffing changes will strengthen the curriculum for elementary and secondary students. Spanish and German will be introduced in elementary schools. Beginning in the 2018-2019 school year, students entering Grade 7 will begin to have choices for taking Spanish I or German I for high school credit.

The Fiscal Year 2018 budget strengthens Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics programming at Page and Bagnall elementary schools in West Newbury and Groveland, respectively, with the addition of a STEAM coordinator. This will provide a full-time STEAM coordinator for each school, rather than the current half-time allocation.

A new central office position, assistant superintendent, is included in the Fiscal Year 2018 budget to support improved teaching and learning across the district, Mulqueen said.

The budget for the coming school year is $38.8 million, a 2 percent increase over Fiscal Year 2017.

Methuen’s Tenney Grammar School celebrates the new school year with its annual Back to School Picnic. This is the third year that families will gather on the school’s front lawn to share food and fun.

“Bring your picnic dinner, a blanket and join the Tenney family for some informal games and music,” said Principal Mary Beth Donovan.

Tenney is at 75 Pleasant St. and serves students in pre-kindergarten through Grade 8. First- through eighth-graders begin school on Tuesday, Aug. 29.

The Methuen High School Ranger Marching Band spent this week hard at work at Band Camp, just in time for the start of football season on Friday, Aug. 18. Fall athletics information night is Wednesday, Aug. 30. New teachers, just like students, have to attend orientation before the start of the school year. They will attend a two-day session on Wednesday and Thursday, Aug. 23 and 24 before starting school a day before students, on Monday, Aug. 28.

Haverhill Public Schools open their doors to students in grades 1 through 12 on Tuesday, Aug. 29. Kindergarten begins Sept. 5. All Haverhill students will attend for a half-day on Friday, Sept. 1, and enjoy a day off for Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 4.

Pentucket: Aug. 31

Timberlane: Aug. 31

Methuen: Aug. 29

Whittier: Aug. 29 for freshmen and new students; Aug. 30 for all students
