Elaine R. Florent, 89, One-Time VP of Haverhill Police Credit Union

Elaine R. Florent, 89, of Haverhill, died at Wingate Nursing Home Aug. 14, surrounded by her children.

Born Feb. 20, 1928 in Haverhill, she was the daughter of Edgar and Cordelia (Sevigny) Desrosiers. She was a graduate of St. Joseph School and Haverhill High School. Her primary vocation was as a homemaker for her late husband George and 10 children. In addition, she worked for many years for Dr. Peter W. Wheeler and served as bookkeeper and vice president of the Haverhill Police Department Credit Union. Florent was an excellent typist and fluent in shorthand.

Florent was a dedicated Catholic who was very active at the former St. Joseph Parish and then All Saints Parish in Haverhill. She was a lifetime member of the Ladies of St. Anne Society, served as a Eucharistic Minister and, for many years, scheduled the Lectors and Eucharistic ministers. She had a great love for the blessed Virgin Mother Mary and recited the rosary daily. She took joy in giving to her favorite charities, including The Marist Fathers, Society of the Little Flower and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

She loved to travel and her favorite places to visit were Bermuda and Aruba. An avid reader, she especially enjoyed reading biographies. She also liked solving crossword puzzles and cheering for local legends Bobby Orr and Doug Flutie. She tirelessly planned many Class of 1946 HHS reunions and Haverhill Police Relief Association events.

She was married for 65 years to George A. Florent, who died Jan. 8. She also was predeceased by her brother Roland, for whom she faithfully cared after their parents passed away. She is survived by her 10 children, Donna Demers of Haverhill, Peter Florent and his wife Susan of Haverhill, Michael Florent and his wife Anne Marie of Newburyport, Theresa Romotsky and her husband Jerry of Newburyport, Denise Hamel and her husband Wally of Durham, N.H., Anne Marie Mede of Haverhill, Joseph Florent and his wife Dee of Haverhill, Paul Florent of Newburyport, Mary Harriman and her husband Roger of Haverhill, and Michele Perillo and her husband Randy of Stoneham. She is also survived by many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild. Her family thanks all those from Wingate who cared for her.

Visitation is Thursday, Aug. 17, at Driscoll Funeral Home, 309 S. Main St., Haverhill, from 4 to 8 p.m. Services begin Friday in the funeral home at 9. Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in All Saints Church, 120 Bellevue Ave., Haverhill, at 10 a.m. Burial follows in St. Joseph Cemetery.
