City Councilor Mary Ellen Daly O’Brien wants answers about the bump-outs that have been in place on Merrimack Street since May.
The temporary seating areas at A-1 Deli and Barrett’s Specialty Foods occupy parking spaces in front of the businesses.
Daly O’Brien said she has questions about the future of the installations, and has concerns about the safety of the seating areas the jut into the street. She is also concerned about the aesthetics of the jersey barriers that surround the tables and chairs.
City Council is scheduled to discuss the bump-outs when it meets Tuesday, Aug. 8. The meeting, which is open to the public, begins at 7 p.m. and takes place in the Theodore A. Pelosi City Council Chambers on the second floor of Haverhill City Hall.
In a recent blog post, Mayor James J. Fiorentini said the city is looking at new ways of treating the bump-outs, which create areas for outdoor food service at downtown restaurants. The city recently installed a more permanent seating area in front of Wang’s Table on Washington Street, Fiorentini said.
City Council. Do-nothings who pretend they’re not there for the city insurance. Election time. Time to paint crosswalks and look busy. What a joke. There is no way I would ever support the re-election of any of these hacks. Barrett, Daly, and the rest. Ridiculous.
Wait, we’re spending money, taking away parking spots and reconfiguring sidewalks to the benefit of an elected public official, in the case of Barrett’s?

This is too painful to read. With crime on the rise, not enough law enforcement to combat it, rising water and proptery tax rates, over-crowding in schools, and tax dollars being spent on a record pace on foolish campaign critical projects – our city council will take up a key issue at the next meeting – that issue being….Merrimack Street “Bump-outs”.
Wow, the ineptness and total lack of leadership in the city is stunning, and yet, Haverhill citizens continue to support hacks and hangers on who would raise their own pay and benefits.
How much more can you take tax payers?
I would suggest that every concerned citizen travel to Merrimack Street to see what these “Bump-Outs” look like in real time. They are AWFUL! A-1 has the most awful cheap latticework around their two outdoor tables, and the space outside of Barrett’s is awful also, with plywood and jersey barriers surrounding both areas and additional signs on top of the barriers. If so much warning is needed, how safe is it out there at the outdoor tables.
The buildings on Merrimack Street are deteriorating, not well maintained, and could use major rehab work. Shame on all of those who own buildings and who have allowed them to deteriorate. It is also a rotten shame that Merrimack Street looks the way it does; no Harbor Place and other new buildings will make up for the mess that has been made of our formerly vibrant shopping area. The status of the entire street is a disgrace.

So I wasn’t able to point out that Mary Ellen said and did nothing as a female city councilor when a young teenage girl was dragged into a city park by two criminal invaders in the city illegally and raped.
Can’t, thank you for bringing up her history of silence when it comes to criminal invaders. Why do you suppose she never says a word?
It’s coming up on election season so it’s time for the incumbent hacks to come out of hiding to get their faces in the paper to make it look like they’re actually contributing something to the city. Exhibit A…Mary Ellen Daly O’Brien.
We haven’t heard from Mary Ellen since she was prompted by her nursing friends at Holy Family Hospital in Haverhill to try and stop Anna Jacques Hospital from bringing a new healthcare facility Primrose Street. She wanted to stop the creation of healthcare alternatives for citizens of Haverhill for the sake of protecting her personal friends. Never mind that Anna Jacques would be significantly contributing to the tax base in the city and creating great jobs, there was Mary Ellen commenting on an issue she had absolutely no expertise in. How’d that work out Mary Ellen?
