Evelyn (Cronin) Curry, 95, Worked as Telephone Operator

Evelyn (Cronin) Curry, 95, of Haverhill, daughter of Phillip Francis and Marion (Norton) Cronin Foisy, died July 29 at Penacook Place under Merrimack Valley Hospice care.

Curry was born in South Berwick, Maine, and grew up in Haverhill. She graduated from Haverhill High School with the class of 1939. She married John “Buzzy” Curry and they had two sons, John Norton and Philip Francis Curry. She worked as a telephone operator at New England Telephone Company in Haverhill and Western Electric.

After relocating to Portsmouth, N.H., she continued to work as a civilian telephone operator at two military bases. She was employed at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard for a short time, followed by more than 35 years at Pease Air Force Base, retiring as chief operator. Curry returned to Haverhill in the early nineties as a caretaker of her uncle, D. Harold Cronin. She had been in declining health recently and had several rehabs at Penacook Place. She had nearly four months of near-independent living at home this year, with her two sons traveling from the west coast alternating assistance.  A recent severe health setback led to the need for hospice care.

She enjoyed music, dancing, cats, dogs horses theater and most of all flower gardening.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend her visitation Friday, Aug. 4, from 10 to 11 a.m., at H.L. Farmer and Sons Funeral Home, 106 Summer St., Haverhill. Her Funeral Mass of Christian Burial follows the visitation at 11:30 a.m., at St. James Church, 185 Winter St., Haverhill. Burial is in Linwood Cemetery.
