Haverhill Schools Opening Day Less Than a Month Away

Beginning today and continuing through the month of August, WHAV provides a daily report counting down to the first day of school in Greater Haverhill.

Haverhill Public Schools welcome students in grades 1 through 12 back to class on Tuesday, Aug. 29. Several of the city’s elementary schools have planned open houses on the eve of opening day for parents to meet teachers and learn the rules of their child’s school. All the following open houses take place on Monday, Aug. 28:

Bradford Elementary School has split its program into three parts. Kindergarten and grade 2 parents will attend from 3 to 3:30 p.m., first- and third-grade parents from 4 to 4:30 p.m. and fourth-grade parents from 5 to 5:30 p.m. The school’s PTO will have a table set up with information on how to get involved.

Golden Hill welcomes parents of students in all grades from 4 to 5:30 p.m.

Pentucket Lake Elementary School Principal Diane Connolly will address parents in the cafeteria beginning at 4:30 p.m., followed by classroom visits.

At Walnut Square School, all parents are invited to an open house from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Classroom assignments will be available the week of Aug. 21.

All Haverhill students have the day off on Friday, Sept. 1, and on Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 4. Schools reopen Tuesday, Sept. 5, which is also the first day for kindergarten.

At Whittier Regional Vocational Technical High School, freshmen and new students report on Aug. 29, with all students beginning the year on Wednesday, Aug. 30. Bus routes will be available in late August.

In the Timberlane Regional School District, which serves students from Atkinson, Danville, Plaistow and Sandown, N.H., school starts on Thursday, Aug. 31.

Parents of Timberlane students interested in participating in fall sports should plan to attend the Fall Athletic Awareness Night on Tuesday, Aug. 22, beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the Timberlane High School Performing Arts Center on Greenough Road.

Students in the Pentucket Regional School District, which covers Groveland, Merrimac and West Newbury,  return to class on Tuesday, Sept. 5, the day after Labor Day. However, seventh- and ninth-graders will attend orientation in their new schools, as will the district’s youngest students in pre-K and kindergarten.

Beginning Aug. 10, Haverhill High School will offer College Bootcamp sessions for members of the Class of 2018. Run by the HHS Counseling Office, the sessions will cover topics including various college application systems, the financial aid form known as FAFSA, scholarships, and the college essay. Sessions will continue on Aug. 11, 17 and 18, all from noon to 2 p.m. On the final day, a panel of admissions representatives will answer questions about the college application process and what they look for in a potential applicant.

Tune in tomorrow for more back-to-school information.
