Aide: Mayor Committed to New Softball Field for Haverhill High Girls Team

Council Vice President Melinda Barrett

Mayor James J. Fiorentini is expected to give a progress report to the City Council at its Sept. 19 meeting on the city’s plans to build a softball field for the Haverhill High School varsity girls team.

Mayoral aide David Van Dam said on Tuesday that the mayor is committed to providing the softball team with a field that is comparable in quality to the diamond the HHS baseball team plays on in Haverhill Stadium.

“It will happen,” Van Dam said. He estimated the cost at about $700,000.

Van Dam said the city has hired a landscape architect to study two proposed locations for the field and to recommend the best choice.

Council Vice President Melinda Barrett and Councilors Colin F. LePage and Mary Ellen Daly O’Brien have been advocating for more than a year for a new field for the girls.

“It was a long time coming, and I’m happy,” Barrett told Van Dam.
