Covanta Business Manager Mark Van Weelden has been appointed to Northern Essex Community College’s Foundation Board, the school announced Wednesday, July 12.
Van Weelden, a resident of Eliot, Maine, will serve a multi-year term assisting the NECC Foundation in raising funds for student scholarships, equipment purchases, program revitalization efforts and staff development.
Supporting educational advancement is paramount for Van Weelden, whose mother served as an executive dean at Sauk Valley Community College and McHenry County Community College in Illinois prior to her retirement. “The importance of a strong community college is vital to both the local and state education system,” Van Weelden told WHAV in a statement. “NECC has a proven track record in providing vital educational options to students before and after graduation.”
Van Weelden currently serves as Covanta’s business manager for the Greater Boston, New Hampshire and Maine district. In June, the company – which operates an energy-from-waste plant in Haverhill – was honored by the Environmental Business Council of New England for “quietly” becoming one of the largest recyclers in the state.
