Council OKs Outdoor Tables, Chairs for Businesses With No Food Service

Haverhill businesses now have permission to place tables, chairs and benches on the sidewalk outside their shops from March through October.

City Council approved an amendment to the city ordinance that allows restaurants to serve patrons outdoors.

The new rule does not allow food or drink to be served, but does allow patrons to purchase food or non-alcoholic drinks to go, and consume them at the seating areas provided, explained City Solicitor William D. Cox Jr.

The ordinance is directed to businesses that have adjacent sidewalks.

No permit fee will be charged, but business owners must place a notice with the Public Works Department and name the city on its liability insurance, Cox said.
