Haverhill Man, 37, Sentenced to 90 Months in Prison for Drug, Firearm Offenses

A Haverhill man has been sentenced to 90 months in prison for drug and firearm offenses, the U.S. Attorney’s Office announced Thursday, July 6.

Gamal Jones, 37, who also has prior criminal convictions in New York, was sentenced in federal court Thursday by U.S. District Court Judge Leo T. Sorokin to both prison time and three years supervised release. His sentencing comes three months after Jones pleaded guilty to one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm and three counts of possession with intent to distribute cocaine.

He was arrested in Haverhill following a January 2016 cocaine distribution investigation in the city. At the time of his arrest, Jones possessed more than 80 grams of crack cocaine, a Taurus .45 caliber handgun and a box of .45 caliber ammunition.

Jones was previously convicted in Brooklyn, N.Y. federal court for firearm possession and has prior convictions for criminal possession of a controlled substance, possession of a loaded firearm, and assault in the third degree.
