With Haverhill’s Farmers Market officially open for business, Community Action aims to educate local consumers on SNAP benefits that can be used to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables.

Community Action’s DeAnna Tashjian will speak at the Citizens Center, 10 Welcome Street, on Tuesday, July 11 at 10 a.m. and discuss the SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program)’s Healthy Incentives program.

Through the initiative, participants are eligible to earn extra funding when using EBT cards to purchase fresh produce at a farmers market, farm stand or CSA. As the seminar will explain, the funds will be added back to shoppers’ EBT cards. When shopping for one or two people, an allowance of up to $40 is allocated, while those shopping for a family of three to five can spend $60. Eighty dollars is allowed for families of six or more.

The July 11 SNAP information session is free and open to the public. Haverhill’s Farmers Market is open Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. through Oct. 28 on Bailey Boulevard next to the police station. A list of vendors can be found at TeamHaverhill.org.
