Haverhill’s Plug Pond will remain closed until at least Monday.

While recent laboratory results showed E. coli bacteria levels dropped to safe levels, Recreation Director Vincent Ouellette said last night’s rains may have pushed bacteria counts up again. As a precaution, the popular swimming area will remain closed until new tests can be conducted Monday.

“We remain closed,” Ouellette said. “We’re concern with the rain last night. The levels are probably elevated again.” He explained Friday, runoff into the pond caused by rain is usually the source of contamination.

Levels from Friday’s sample shows E. coli was found at 190 parts per million—far below the limit of 535, he said.   It takes at least 24 hours to receive new test results from G&L Laboratories.
