A 23-year-old man, whose car burst into flames after striking a utility pole near Lafayette Square last week, is now facing criminal charges.
Christopher Carrier age 23, of 20 Dudley St., Haverhill, has been issued a Haverhill District Court summons. He faces charges of unlicensed driving, reckless driving, leaving the scene of an accident with property damage, speeding, failure to stop and attempting to steal a street sign.
WHAV was the only media to report on the initial chaos. Carrier was apparently being pursued by police around 2:30 a.m., a week ago Saturday, down Broadway and into Lafayette Square. His car struck a utility pole near Phaneuf Insurance, 123 Lafayette Square, according to Fire Chief William F. Laliberty. The chief theorized the car hydroplaned while negotiating the corner and slid into the pole.
Lafayette Square was closed to traffic, electricity was out and businesses closed most of the day after the accident.
