Whittier Vo-Tech Student Roope Wins First Place for ‘Fire & Ice’ Cake

Kim Roope, a sophomore at Whittier Regional Vocational Technical High School, took first place during the recent statewide SkillsUSA Techspo Cake Decorating Contest.

A Culinary Arts student, Roope presented her “Fire & Ice” cake sculpture, a four-tiered cake with buttercream and covered with fondant she airbrushed—orange on one side, blue on the other.

Roope made spiral designs in red and yellow with fondant to create the flames and white to make the icicles that mirror them. She is an expert on sugar, having taken special courses and studied its creative uses, especially the kind extracted from beets called Isomalt. She used it to sculpt her winning cake.
