For more than a decade, Mayor James J. Fiorentini has devoted unflagging determination and effort to transform an abandoned rail line into a riverside promenade.
As the pieces of his dream come together, City Council is preparing to honor the mayor’s dedication by naming the rail trail in His Honor’s honor.

The City Council meets Tuesday, May 16, beginning at 7 p.m. in the Theodore A. Pelosi Council Chambers on the second floor of City Hall.
Councilor William J. Macek will present an order asking his colleagues to rename the Bradford Rail Trail for Fiorentini.
The full order states: “That the full length of the Bradford Rail Trail, on the southerly side of the Merrimack River from the Basiliere Bridge to the Comeau Bridge, currently existing or contemplated in the future, shall be dedicated and named as The Mayor James J. Fiorentini Bradford Rail Trail.
In Fiorentini’s 2010 State of the City address, the mayor looked forward to the day “our children and grandchildren will be able to walk along our own string of parks and walkways along the river, and we will never forget the river, our greatest asset, belongs to all of us.”
Since raising the idea of the riverside trail, the mayor has worked with volunteers, local and state politicians, businesses owners, service organizations and the school department to find ways to buy, clear, construct and beautify the trail, bit by bit and piece by piece.
