With Demolition Underway, Cedardale Plans Summer Programs

Orange markings spell the end of the main building at Cedardale Health and Fitness, 931 Boston Road.

Cedardale is moving ahead with a summer schedule for the undamaged, outdoor portion of its Haverhill health and fitness complex. It is also projecting a September start for construction of a new club.

In an email to members, Cedardale said opening of summer programs at 931 Boston Road, Haverhill, is expected Saturday, June 17, but warns demolition of the fire-damaged adjacent building could affect the schedule.

“The opening of the outdoor facility is dependent on receiving city approval which can only be received once the demolition is complete,” a statement said, adding, “We have been working closely with the city of Haverhill and they are optimistic and excited to get us back up and running and foresee no problems with opening on that date,”

Demolition of the main building, which was heavily damaged March 1 by a three-alarm blaze, is underway.

“The best way to enter the outdoor facility will be determined once demolition is complete. Construction on the new facility will not begin until September,” a statement said. “There will be no building or indoor access this summer.”

Cedardale’s Haverhill summer program offers both swim lessons and swim teams. Its tennis programs will include more night programs. There will be no outdoor court fees or round robin fees in Haverhill, but the normal court fee of $24 per hour will be charged at indoor courts at the temporary Andover site.

The Haverhill fire began in a women’s locker room and several possible sources, including electrical wiring, small appliances or light fixtures, may be to blame, officials said. Meanwhile, many club activities are taking place at the former Boston Sports Club on Lowell Road in Andover.
