Three guests on 97.9 WHAV’s Open Mike Show helped illuminate what appears to be one of Haverhill’s busiest weekends ever.

Karren McCabe and Gerrie Maffris, associated with the Art Market, discussed Creative Haverhill’s new “First Fridays” initiative. Plans call for night time store openings, walking tours and entertainment in downtown Haverhill on the first Friday of every month through the fall. It kicks off Friday, May 5. A schedule of activities appears below.

Albert Henderson, representing the Haverhill Firefighting Museum, gave a preview of Saturday’s Kentucky Derby Gala, 143rd Run for the Roses, beginning at 5 p.m., at the museum, 75 Kenoza Ave.

Derby viewing begins at 6 p.m., and there will be raffles, prizes for best derby hat and attire, entertainment by Dan Sky, a Southern Fare buffet dinner and a cash bar featuring Mint Juleps. Tickets are being sold in advance, but a limited number may be available at the door. The cost is $60 per person for adults only and purchases may be made online at haverhillfirefightingmuseum.org or by calling 978-835-1565.

Mentions were also made of Saturday’s plans to transform a block of Merrimack Street, between How and Main Streets, into a “Better Block,” with entertainment, pop-up shops, bicycle riding and more.

On Sunday, Haverhill’s Whittier Birthplace plans an author’s day, beginning at 1 p.m., featuring the formal release of a new anthology, “Murder Among Friends.”  Whittier Birthplace is at 305 Whittier Road.
