pay for newsHaverhill Cultural Council is celebrating 21 new programs, paid for with almost $27,000 in state grants, with a public reception next Wednesday.

Entertainment features live music performed by from Liz Bills, an American Idol finalist and opening act for Bon Jovi. The event takes place April 26, from 6:30 to 8:30, at Haverhill Citizens Center, 10 Welcome St.

“The Haverhill Cultural Council is leaving its mark on the community by the provision of grants to those reinforcing the community through the arts, humanities and sciences,” said council chairman Letriah Masters. Citing the group’s slogan, she added, “We truly are ‘Enriching Haverhill, One Grant at a Time.’”

Residents are invited to attend the Grant Recipient Reception to learn more about the Cultural Council and mingle with the people who are bringing forth the programs.

Of the grant requests received this year, 21 of 41 received some level of funding, 12 of the 21 were awarded money for new programs and eight are targeted to, or feature, students and youngsters. Seven other grant recipients are presenting large community festivals or series, including Savor Haverhill, O+, Boston Youth Music and Arts Festival, Movies By The River, Christmas Stroll, River Ruckus and the 10th Anniversary Bradford Common Music Series.

“With twice as many applicants this year than last, HCC found itself tasked with making some extremely difficult cuts that should not diminish the importance and vision of those applicants who were not selected,” said Alison Colby-Campbell, vice chairman.

To reserve a place at the reception, call Masters at 978-374-4500, ext. 31 or email [email protected].
