April is National Garden Month, so plan some fun gardening activities into this month’s schedule.

This tradition started in the 1980’s when the National Garden Bureau worked with other horticulture organizations to celebrate the first National Garden Week April 12 to 18, 1987. In 2002 the National Gardening Association wanted to expand the celebration to the whole month of April.

No matter where you live you can find a way to keep your green thumb busy this month.  Everyone can start some microgreens indoors. All you need is a bit of seed starting mix, organic or sprouting seeds, and a space near a sunny window. Or Hsu Growing Supply offers seed starter kits.

And plant a container filled with both edibles and ornamental plants suited to your growing conditions. Set it on the balcony, patio or front steps. You’ll enjoy the beautiful flowers and convenience of harvesting fresh vegetables right outside your door.

A bit more information:  Don’t stop there.  Plan weekly garden activities for family and friends. Plan a seed swap, grow some wheat grass for your favorite cat or start a worm bin to convert kitchen scraps into a valuable soil amendment.
