Ted and Mary Murphy, longtime owners of Garrison Golf, will be hailed for their more than 40 years of dedication and service to the community at the Haverhill YMCA’s 2017 Legacy Event in May.

The Murphys will be honored Saturday, May 6, 5:30 p.m., at Bradford Country Club, 201 Chadwick Road.

The honorees purchased Garrison Golf Center and made Haverhill their home in 1969. Mary has served on several committees for both St. Joseph’s School and St. Joseph’s Church including as an officer of the school’s Parent-Teacher’s Organization and chairwoman of the school’s Christmas bazaar; served on the City of Haverhill Parks and Recreation Commission and as a board member of Haverhill YMCA.

Ted is a lifetime member of the Greens Superintendents of America and a more than 40-year member of the Professional Golf Association of America. In 1989, he received the prestigious New England Section PGA Junior Leader Award. He is also a former member of the Lions Club and a longtime member of the Knights of Columbus.

Together, they have donated time and effort to the Haverhill High School Athletic Program. In 1978, Mary established the Haverhill Boys Basketball and Golf Team Booster Clubs, and later served as president of both. She was the school’s cheerleader advisor from 1978 to 1985.  For the past 46 years, the Murphys have also hosted and co-sponsored the Haverhill Gazette Santa Fund Hole-In-One Contest, which has raised more than $210,000 for Haverhill children and adults with food, clothing and toys for the holiday season.

They received the Greater Haverhill Chamber of Commerce Community Leadership Award in 2003. In 2008 they also received the Yankee Clipper Council Boy Scouts of America’s Distinguished Citizens Award.

Now 81, Ted continues to teach all ages from the popular 4- to 7-year-old program to the weekly Monday Morning Ladies and Senior Golf Clinics. Many Garrison employees have been inspired to become golf professionals.

Legacy event tickets are $65 each, of $600 for a table, and includes dinner. Proceeds benefit the Haverhill YMCA. Reservations are accepted by April 18 by emailing Tracy Fuller at [email protected].
