Snow Emergency, Blizzard Warning Closes Schools, Offices

Snow emergencies are in effect across the region as a major winter storm takes hold. Schools and city and town halls are closed and most events cancelled, including Plaistow, N.H., town elections.

Schools are closed in Haverhill, Methuen and Andover, as well as Whittier Regional Vocational Technical High School, Pentucket Regional High School and day and evening classes at Northern Essex Community College. A planned staff development day at Timberlane has also been cancelled. WHAV meteorologist Rob St. Pierre said a winter storm warning is in effect until 1 p.m. and a blizzard watch from 1 p.m until 7 p.m.

“Snow, heavy at times Tuesday, turning windy. Accumulations 12 to 18 inches by the end of the day. Temperature will be close to 30.”

Haverhill Mayor James J. Fiorentini’s “State of the City” address and Haverhill City Council meeting are cancelled.

Haverhill, Methuen, Andover, Plaistow and Groveland are delaying trash collection by one day for the remainder of the week.

Sandown, N.H., will have town elections as planned until 8 p.m. MBTA service is available on a limited schedule.

Besides closing during the storm, Methuen City Hall plans a 10 a.m., delayed opening Wednesday. Methuen’s parking ban lasts until Wednesday afternoon at 4:30, and will be extended as needed. Methuen Police Chief Joseph E. Solomon urges residents to remain indoors.

“Remain inside your house, unless it’s an emergency and you need to go outside, to allow the DPW to clear the roadway and to allow emergency vehicles to move about.”

Planned meetings of the Methuen Board of Health and Special Education Parent Advisory Council as well as parking ticket hearings scheduled for Tuesday have also been cancelled.

Andover plans to lift its parking ban Wednesday, at 6 a.m. Check andoverma.gov for updates regarding potential additional parking bans. The town’s Memorial Hall Library, Senior Center at Punchard and Cormier Youth Center remain closed.

Merrimack Valley Chamber of Commerce’s “Luck of the Leprechaun” mixer has been delayed until next Tuesday, March 21, 5 to 7 p.m., at the DoubleTree Hotel, Andover.
