The Merrimac Public Safety Building Committee is having two public meetings to consider a renovated fire headquarters on the current site and demolition of a portion of a building housing the police department.
Officials said the police department building is failing and sinking into the ground. The Public Safety Building Committee recommends replacement.
Plans include possible construction of the town’s first standalone police station and a modern public works facility. The first public hearing and presentation take place Thursday, March 23, at 7 p.m., upstairs at Merrimac Town Hall. Another presentation takes place Tuesday, April 4, at 7 p.m., during Merrimac candidates night.
Committee members include Police Chief Eric M. Shears, Fire Chief Ralph Spencer, DPW Director Robert Sinibaldi, Finance Committee Chairman Richard LeSavoy, Building Committee member Mark Tocci, Finance Director Carol McLeod, former Selectmen and Capital Planning Committee member Rick Pinciaro and former Selectmen and Senior Center Director Laura Mailman.
The town chose HKT Architects during August, 2015, to study options for the Merrimac Public Safety Complex,16 East Main St. The work included a review of existing facilities, an evaluation of safety and functional aspects of the building, programming for the Police, Fire, Emergency Services, Intermediate Ambulance Service and Public Works departments and a review of off-site locations for possible new buildings.
Merrimac has since received a donation of land suitable for new construction at 106 West Main St.
