Mabel T. “Mal” (Tickelis) Callas, 89, Methuen School Secretary

Mabel_CallasMabel T. “Mal” (Tickelis) Callas, 89, of Bradford, died Friday morning, March 3, at Penacook Place Nursing Home, Haverhill.

She was born in Haverhill, March 25, 1927, daughter of the late Emanuel and Despina (Kelaithou) Tickelis. Educated in the Haverhill school system, Callas graduated from Haverhill High School, class of 1944. She was employed for a period of time as a secretary at the former William Bixby Co., Haverhill, and also as a secretary for the Methuen School System. Known for her baking and excellent Greek pastries, she was a lifelong member of Holy Apostles Saints Peter and Paul Greek Orthodox Church, Haverhill, Callas enjoyed reading, walking, cooking and cherished time spent with her grandchildren.

She was the wife of the late William P. Callas who died in 2005 and sister of the late Socrates Tickelis and Susanna Tickelis. Her survivors include three daughters, Kristina Thompson and her husband Walter of Bradford, Sylvia Tessier and her husband Doug of Newport, N.H., and Deborah Callas and her husband Joseph Bourke of Warner, N.H.; son, Peter Callas and his wife Rose of Beverly; four grandchildren, Alyssa Stevens and her husband Joshua, Nichole Cretarola, Emily Bourke and Lauren Thompson; two great grandchildren, Kase and Gabriella Stevens; as well as a nephew, Emanuel Tickelis and his wife Anne.

Relatives and friends were invited to attend her calling hours this morning at H.L. Farmer and Sons Funeral Home, 106 Summer St., Haverhill, and funeral at Holy Apostles Saints Peter and Paul Greek Orthodox Church, 154-156 Winter St., Haverhill. Burial is in Linwood Cemetery, Haverhill. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to Beacon Hospice, 350 Main St., Haverhill, MA 01830, Penacook Place Nursing Home, 150 Water St., Haverhill, MA 01830, or Alzheimer’s Association, 480 Pleasant St., Watertown, MA 02472.
