Helen W. (Smart) Johnson, 96, Worked 40 Years in Shoe Industry

Helen_JohnsonHelen W. (Smart) Johnson, 96, of Haverhill, wife of the late Charles S. Johnson, passed away March 2, at her home surrounded by her family.

Born in Haverhill, she was the daughter of the late Alvin W. and Anna M. (Pierce) Smart. She was raised in Haverhill and educated in the Haverhill Public School system. Johnson was employed for more than 40 years in the shoe industry working at Doherty Shoe, Colonial Shoe and various other shoe companies. In her younger years she worked as a waitress in local restaurants. She was a charter and life member of the Amvets Auxiliary Post 147. She was a past president, officer and secretary, and volunteered her services in many other capacities. Johnson enjoyed other volunteer opportunities, including visiting the elderly. She was an avid reader and loved knitting and crocheting.

Johnson is survived by her children, James A. Johnson and his wife Cynthia of Powell, Ohio; Charlene Holland and her husband Timothy of Haverhill; six grandchildren, Roger Dumas, Robert Dumas, Christopher Johnson, Andrea Johnson, Jeffrey Johnson and Jessica Trail; and 10 great grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her daughter Barbara Cook and her longtime companion John Ingalls.

Family and friends are invited to attend calling hours Monday, March 6, from 4 to 7 p.m., at the Kevin B. Comeau Funeral Home, 486 Main St., Haverhill. Funeral services are Tuesday at 10 a.m. in the funeral home. Burial will follow at Linwood Cemetery, 41 John Ward Ave., Haverhill.
