As Haverhill begins assembling its budget for the year beginning July 1, residents are being asked to name their wish list items—for this year and the future.

Council Vice President Melinda E. Barrett leads the discussion when her Citizen Outreach Committee meets next Tuesday night. She and Councilors Andy Vargas, Colin F. LePage and Thomas J. Sullivan also want to know what Haverhill neighborhoods should look like by the year 2030.

“I want to find out what people are thinking—where we should set our sights, short term and long term,” Barrett told WHAV. “We’re trying to get some ideas about what people are looking for, or different improvements they want.”

Barrett said the next step will be to set priorities based on residents’ feedback. While councilors informally solicit and receive ideas from citizens, this is the first-time ideas will be formally collected and ranked, she said.

Councilors formed the Citizen Outreach Committee last year. It incorporates President John A. Michitson’s longtime appeal for better planning and Vargas’ campaign promise to reach more citizens. The committee also plans to determine the best methods for ongoing collection of ideas and concerns online and in the neighborhoods.

The committee meets at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 21, in Theodore A. Pelosi Jr. City Council Chambers, on the second floor of City Hall. There is no regular city council meeting because of Monday’s Presidents Day holiday and school vacation week.
