There’s no school in Haverhill, Methuen, Whittier Vo-Tech, Pentucket Regional and other districts as valley residents brace for between five and 10 inches of snow.

WHAV meteorologist Rob St. Pierre says a winter storm warning is in effect from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m., Thursday. He says it will be cloudy with snow heavy at times, breezy, with temperatures in the mid to upper 20s and dropping by night to 10 above. Higher snowfall amounts will be near the coast.

Mayor James J. Fiorentini declared a snow emergency beginning at 1 a.m., and asked residents to try to keep their cars off any streets.

Among other cancellations, ValleyWorks’ planned February Job fair and the regular meeting of the Haverhill School Committee have also been cancelled.

Trash and recycling collection in Haverhill will be delayed one day. Thursday’s pickup will be Friday and Friday’s collection is Saturday.

The city’s 311 call center, however, is open from until 5 p.m. The mayor said those who need assistance after hours may call the highway department at 978 374-2360 or 978 374-2364.
