Third Annual Fatty Walrus Fat Bike Race Kicks Off Sunday

fatty_walrusMore than 50 racers are expected to participate Sunday in the first race of the Fatty Walrus Fat Bike Race, known as “The Arctic Kickoff,” along the trails surrounding Winnekenni Castle.

It is the third annual event of the three-race series and open to racers 14 years of age or older. Participants must ride a fat bike—3.8 inch or bigger tires—throughout the series. Demo bikes from Riverside Cycle Haverhill will be available.

“We’ve got great views, rolling fire roads, sweet single track, berms and wooops, epic climbs and…a castle!” said organizers, promoting the race.

The five-mile Timber Wolves race begins at 10 a.m., followed by the 10-mile Polar Bears race at 11. All events are timed and results will be posted.

Online registration, with a reduced fee of $25, is available until 10 p.m., Friday. Same-day registration is $30 and begins at 9 a.m., Sunday, at the city’s Plug Pond Recreation Area. Racers must have or purchase an Eastern Fat Tire Association (EFTA) license, available by race or annually. A license sign-up will be available at the race.

Other races in the Fatty Walrus Series are the Deep Freeze Challenge, Sunday, Feb. 12, and the Frosty Finale, Sunday, Feb. 19.
