Maria Belmira Tavares, 89, Formerly Worked in Electronics

Maria_TavaresMaria Belmira Tavares, 89, of Haverhill, died Jan. 19, at Lawrence General Hospital, following an extended illness.

Born, raised and educated in Sao Miguel, The Azores, Portugal, daughter of the late Manuel Padeiro and Maria Tavares, she came to the United States in 1966 and settled first in the Boston area and later moved to California. She finally settled in Haverhill in 1984 and was employed by local electronics companies. A member of All Saints Parish and the former Saint Joseph Parish of Haverhill, Tavares was devoted to her large extended family. She enjoyed her work as well as crocheting and sewing.

The wife of the late Tobia Medeiros, She leaves a son and daughter-in-law, Aires and Helena Medeiros of Wakefield; daughter, Edla (Medeiros) Afonso, of Haverhill; grandchildren, Ronald T. Afonso, Aires M. Afonso, Charlene (Afonso) Sandlin, Brian M. Afonso, Craig Medeiros, Matthew Medeiros and Brianne (Medeiros) Savicki; 11great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; sister, Isabel Oliveira; and several nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend her Mass of Christian Burial Wednesday, Jan. 25, 10 a.m., in All Saints Church, 120 Bellevue Ave. Haverhill, with burial to follow in Linwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial donations be made Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, Boston for Macular Degeneration Research.
