All-America Selections has been helping gardeners grow award winning flowers and vegetables since 1932. This non-profit organization trials and evaluates plants for outstanding qualities suitable for the home garden.
New varieties and plant introductions are tried in nearly 90 locations throughout North America. Volunteer judges rate the plants on improvements in characteristics such as aesthetics, performance and productivity as well as pest and disease tolerance. A plant must have at least two significantly improved qualities to even be considered for an AAS award.
Winners include ornamentals started from seed or cuttings, vegetables and fruits started from seeds and soon herbaceous perennials.
In addition, you will now find regional winners that were outstanding in certain regions, but not nationwide.
A bit more information: All-America Selections Display Gardens are located throughout North America, providing gardeners an opportunity to view current and recent past winners in a garden setting. Many locations host field days and gardening classes as well.
