Driver Dead After Fiery Andover Crash with Tractor-Trailer

The driver killed in a fiery crash in Andover late Tuesday afternoon has been identified as George Sanborn, 75, of Andover.

Sanborn died after his SUV rear ended a tractor trailer and burst into flames on route 125 in Andover around 5 p.m., Tuesday. He was driving a 2009 Dodge Caravan that struck a 2016 Freightliner Tractor Trailer was stopped at the traffic light at Gould Street and route 125, according to a report filed by Trooper Stephen Thompson.

“The force from the impact caused the trailer of the tractor trailer to hit the cab of the Freightliner cracking the rear window. As a result of the crash the Dodge became engulfed in flames,” the report said.

After the Andover Fire Department contained the blaze, Sanborn was pronounced dead. The driver of the Freightliner, a 42-year-old man from Marblehead remained at the scene and no charges were filed.

Route 125 at Gould street was closed for more than three hours to extinguish the fire, clear the road and conduct an investigation.
