Sports Notes: Hillie Boys Win Basketball Home Opener

The Hillie girls varsity ice hockey team entered the weekend undefeated, ready to take on the Methuen/Tewksbury girls on Saturday afternoon. But the weekend’s snowstorm postponed the matchup until an as-yet scheduled date.

Instead, the girls team, made up of students from Haverhill, Pentucket and North Andover high schools, will put their unbeaten streak to the test against Boston Latin at 5 p.m. Wednesday on Haverhill’s home ice at Veterans Memorial  Rink.

In boys varsity basketball, Hillie Nation was rewarded for its patience with a win against Lowell in the team’s first home game of the season.

The Hillies, under new head coach Soulemayne Wane, played to a 3-win, 3-loss record in a six-game road swing before returning to HHS on Friday. The victory, by a score of 59-54, gave the boys a winning record in advance of Tuesday night’s home game against North Andover. The game starts at 7 p.m. in the HHS gym.

At Whittier Regional Vocational Technical High School, the freshmen boys basketball and varsity wrestling teams were sidelined because of Saturday’s storm.
