Unconfirmed reports indicate a suspect is in custody after an hours-long armed standoff at 71 Franklin St.

Haverhill Mayor James J. Fiorentini earlier confirmed police had an armed person holed up in a Franklin Street home in the Acre neighborhood. The mayor said:

“The police have a armed suspect cornered in a home on Franklin Street. The police have the situation under control but so that they can do their jobs and keep you safe we ask that you stay in your homes until further notice.”

Contrary to Boston media reports, the home where the gunman was located is 71 Franklin St. City records show the owner of the property is Jonathan Raymond. A neighbor told WHAV his daughter was among those evacuated from the neighborhood.

Earlier unconfirmed reports suggested shots have been fired at police officers and that a suspect was barricaded in a home with a possible hostage. Again, those reports were unconfirmed.

Fiorentini had advised around 4, this afternoon, that Franklin Street area residents to stay indoors or stay away from the area.

The mayor’s guidance came after the street was blocked just after 3 p.m., and state police helicopters circled the area.

Those who are away from their homes in the area were advised to travel to the Citizens Center, 10 Welcome St. The city provided a bus at the corner of Charles Street.

This is a developing story.
