Arthur Petrou, 94, UMass Lowell Engineering Professor

arthur_petrouArthur Petrou, 94, of Haverhill, died Thursday night, Jan. 5, at Country Manor Rehabilitation, Newburyport.

He was born in Haverhill, Oct. 22, 1927, son of the late Dimitrios and Sofia (Miserlis) Petrou. Educated in the Haverhill school system, Petrou graduated from Haverhill Trade School, class of 1940. He earned his engineering degree from the University of New Hampshire and his master’s in engineering from Northeastern University. For more than 30 years, he was employed at the University of Massachusetts, Lowell, as an engineering professor. During World War II, he served his country in the Merchant Marines and Army Air Corps in the South Pacific. He was a lifelong member of Holy Apostles Saints Peter and Paul Greek Orthodox Church, Haverhill; American Society of Mechanical Engineers, American Society of Engineering Educators and Haverhill National Guard, Co. A.

Petrou was the husband of the late Katherine (Houreas) Petrou, who died in 1987, and step father of the late Mary Paraskevakos, who died in 2014. His survivors include a son James Petrou of Wichita, Kan.; two sisters, Mary Brostek of Seabrook, N.H., and Rita Thompson of Haverhill; stepdaughter, Patricia Bergeron and her husband Albert of Atkinson, N.H.; sister-in-law, Patricia Petrou of Gloucester; as well as several nieces, and nephews.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend his visitation of Tuesday morning, Jan. 10, from 9:30 to 10:30 at H.L. Farmer and Sons Funeral Home, 106 Summer St., Haverhill, followed by a Funeral Service at 11 in Holy Apostles Saints Peter and Paul Greek Orthodox Church, 154-156 Winter St., Haverhill.
