School Notes: District Asked to Develop Program to Honor JFK

City councilors will ask Superintendent James F. Scully to develop a program on citizenship and public service to recognize the 100th anniversary of the birth of President John F. Kennedy this year.

Councilor Joseph J. Bevilacqua suggested the city of Haverhill do something to celebrate the most recent son of Massachusetts to serve as the nation’s president. Councilors agreed unanimously to ask Scully and Mayor James J. Fiorentini to create school and city observances during 2017.

Hunking Open House Planned Wednesday

Now that their children have settled into their classrooms, parents are invited to an open house Wednesday at 5 p.m. to see inside the new Hunking School.

Roughly 400 students moved from the original Hunking Middle School into the new building when they returned from the holiday break. The full complement of 1,000 students will occupy the building in September.

Wednesday’s open house is the final planned public tour of the school until a grand opening scheduled for May.

However, Superintendent James F. Scully told city councilors Tuesday that residents who are unable to attend Wednesday’s open house can contact him to schedule a tour. The School Department’s phone number is 978-374-3400.
