School Notes: Whittier Vo-Tech Reaches Out to Middle Schoolers

More than 1,500 middle school students from the region’s public and private schools visited Whittier Regional Vocational Technical High School before the holiday season.

They toured the school’s 20-plus vocational programs and learned about admissions requirements.

School admissions representatives in January will send brochuress to middle schoolers in Haverhill and the 10 other communities that send students to Whittier. Visits to the schools will take place in January and February.

Students can apply to WVT online at whittiertech.org.

Acceptance letters will go out the first week in April.

In addition to Haverhill, Whittier accepts students from Amesbury, Georgetown, Groveland, Merrimac, Ipswich, Rowley, Newburyport, Newbury, Salisbury and West Newbury.

  1. Providing tours to eighth graders: it’s TOO LATE by 8th because students are judged mostly on their Grade 7 performance with a fraction of their Grade 8 performance. The tours should be given to Grade 7 students early in that pivotal year, to ensure students will not throw away their 7th grade year.

    • Tours of both high schools earlier is a great idea. It can only help to develop these relationships with higher education much sooner in the process.
