58-Year-Old Methuen Bicyclist Dies in Traffic Accident

Massachusetts State Police have released the identity of a Methuen bicyclist killed Tuesday afternoon in a collision with a tri-axle truck at an Interstate 495 off-ramp at route 110, Merrimack Street.

According to a State Police spokesperson, Thomas J. Fazio, 58, of Methuen was operating a motorized bicycle on a sidewalk along route 110 westbound before he struck the truck, at about 1:40 p.m., as each started forward on a traffic light change from red to green.

“For unknown reasons the bicyclist came off the side walk and into the roadway striking the passenger side of the truck.   The bicyclist… was determined to be deceased at the scene. The operator of the tri-axle truck, a 29-year-old man from Hudson, N.H., remained at the scene,” a statement reads.

The truck driver was not identified by State Police. No charges have been filed.

The accident remains under investigation by troopers out of Andover barracks, along with the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, State Police Crime Scene Services Section, the Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Section and the Essex County District Attorney’s Office. Methuen Police, Fire and EMS, the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner and Massachusetts Department of Transportation also assisted at the scene.
