Five Haverhill residents, whom police say claimed to be homeless, were arraigned in Haverhill District Court Monday on breaking and entering and trespass charges after being found inside an abandoned property in a Lower Acre neighborhood.

Pete Pena, 37, 11 Grove St.; Reinaldo Santos, 45, 21 Cedar St.; Linda Castro, 43, 40 Green St.; Roxanne Johnson, 34, 127 How St.; and Courtney Matheson, 36, 14 Ashland St., were arrested between 9:34 and 10:11 a.m. at 21 Pentucket St., off Vine Street. Police responded after a neighbor noticed them enter an abandoned property, according to Haverhill Police Detective Lieutenant Robert Pistone, police spokesman.

“Police subsequently checked and found the individuals in there. The individuals claimed to be homeless and had nowhere to stay,” Pistone told WHAV.

Each was charged with misdemeanor breaking and entering and trespassing. Matheson also had an outstanding warrant related to driving with a suspended license. Their bail statuses were not immediately available.
