A public “shout out” to 97.9 WHAV came during Tuesday’s Haverhill City Council meeting.

Haverhill City Councilor William J. Macek, himself an alumnus of WHAV and former owner of several radio stations, delivered his review of WHAV’s return to the airwaves last week at 97.9 FM.

“I’ve been listening and it’s good stuff. And it’s great to have a local radio station back in Haverhill,” Macek said. “I want to thank Tim Coco for all of his hard work, wish him well and hope that everybody supports the station at one time or another, because this is what we’ll need in order to maintain community radio in Haverhill.”

WHAV completed installation of the station’s FM transmitter and antenna above Silver Hill last Wednesday. It is now operating under automatic program test authority, as authorized by the Federal Communications Commission, Washington. The FM signal is radiating throughout Haverhill and surrounding towns. The Silver Hill site was originally built for WHAV in 1947.

Local news and weather airs twice an hour from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., and “Community Spotlight” is heard at quarter past every hour. Other programs include “Democracy Now” at 9 a.m. and Thom Hartmann program from noon to 3 p.m. In between, WHAV airs its own “Soft Gold” music format, featuring classic rock and roll hits from 1954 to 1979.

Formal ceremonies, inaugurating a return of local radio service, are still several weeks away.

  1. The public should know that the licensing of this FM station was held up for over TWO YEARS by mayor Failurentini. Why was he not granting the licenses? Because he wanted WHAV to STOP providing this public comment forum on WHAV. When they refused he then was demanding that people who comment here have to provide their full names so that he could seek revenge on anyone who provided the truth about his lies and deceit. He succeeded at this with The Eagle Tribune and then targeted WHAV for stopping and limiting the public’s rights to free speech about him and his corruption. They should be congratulated for not giving in to his corrupt demands!!

    Congratulations Tim Coco!!
