James P. “Beef” Steer, 58, of Henderson, Nev., and formerly of Haverhill and Raymond, N.H., husband of Lynne (Horan) Steer, passed away Aug. 10, at St. Rose Dominican Hospital, Henderson, Nev., surrounded by his family.
Born in Haverhill and raised in Bradford, he was the son of the late Glen H. and Helen A. (Flynn) Steer. He attended Sacred Hearts School, class of 1972, and was a graduate of Haverhill High School, class of 1976. Steer was employed in various manufacturing facilities in the Haverhill area including Gare Ceramics, Vernon Plastics Corp and Foss Manufacturing. For the past 20 years he worked for the United States Postal Service, first as a letter carrier and most recently in the facilities maintenance department. Most of his postal career was spent in the Haverhill office. In the last year, he transferred to the Las Vegas Post Office. For many years it was a dream of he and his wife to relocate to Henderson, Nev., where he would spend the remainder of his career and a long and happy retirement. He loved spending time on the water and at the local beaches. He was a well- read man, intelligent, witty and had a mind full of information. He was an avid sports fan including all the New England teams, especially the Boston Red Sox. A music lover, he attended several concerts with friends and family over the years. He especially enjoyed music by the Grateful Dead. “Beef” as he was affectionately known, held a large presence in every room he entered.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughter, Julia B. Steer of Raymond, N.H.; siblings, Helen E. Steer of Manchester, N.H.; Mary F. Roberts and her husband Ken of Plaistow, N.H.; Jenna McRae of Georgia; Glen A. Steer of Pasadena, Calif.; John T. Steer and his wife Gerda of Austin, Texas; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services took place this morning at Sacred Hearts Church, South Main Street, Bradford. Arrangements were by Kevin B. Comeau Funeral Home, 486 Main St., Haverhill. Burial was at Elmwood Cemetery, Salem Street, Bradford. Memorial donations may be made in his name to a charity of one’s choice.
