The modern day version of a treasure hunt is taking place at Haverhill’s Tattersall Farm in September.

Participants known as “geocachers” will compete to find hidden outdoor treasures at Tattersall Farm, 542 North Broadway. They will use a website or their GPS-enabled devices such as an iPhone or Android Phone with downloaded apps such as Looking4Cache Lite or c:geo. Those interested should sign up first at www.geocaching.com.

“Through the website you can see millions of geocaches hidden worldwide, and select the information needed pertaining to search. Armed with coordinates, hints and background information provided by other players, go outdoors and start your search,” a statement reads.

Coordinates for the several hidden geocaches at the 150-acre working farm will be furnished.

The treasure hunt takes place Sunday, Sept. 18, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., as part of Essex National Heritage Area’s Trails and Sails program. Proper footwear, insect repellant and long-legged pants are recommended. Participants are asked to refrain from bring their dogs.

Tattersall Farm was owned and operated by the Tattersall family for almost the entire 20th century. Upon her death in 1999, Mary Alice Tattersall, donated the farm to the City of Haverhill. It is maintained as close as possible to the condition it was at that time. Tattersall Farm offers 19th century plantings, working hayfields, rolling meadows, open and wooded paths used for passive activities such as walking, jogging, cross country skiing and, now, geocaching.
