Alfred Crouse Jr., 82, passed away Monday, June 27, at Mass General Hospital.
Born Aug. 19, 1933 to Alfred L Crouse and Florence Martin, he moved to Haverhill as a young man, and lived in the city 55 years. A kidney transplant and stroke survivor, he continued to live a rich and active life in spite of his physical setbacks, spending time with his family and enjoying his hobbies: musicals, jazz and crooners from the 40s and 50s, do-it-yourself home projects and sailing. He was a sailboat owner for most of his life, and was happiest whenon an adventure with his family and friends navigating the coast. He was an active member of the Haverhill Universalist Unitarian Church, and loved participating in the grounds committee where his knowledge as an electrician was put to good use. He worked 30 years at Lucent Technologies, first as an electrician and later as section chief.
Crouse served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War, working as a radar operator on the aircraft carriers Hornet and Bennington. During leave he would hitchhike from New Jersey to Massachusetts to see his then-girlfriend, Marie, who would later become his wife of 59 years.
Besides his wife, he leaves a brother, Henry Crouse; sister, Florence Samuel; children, Karen Parker, Jane DeLeire, David Crouse and Michael Crouse; and grandchildren, Eric Sanford, Nathan Sanford, Kayla Parker, Michael Parker, Dylan Crouse, Noah Crouse, Zoe Crouse and Beckett Crouse.
Family and friends are invited to attend a life celebration Saturday, Aug. 6, 11 a.m., at Universalist Unitarian Church of Haverhill, 15 Kenoza Ave, Haverhill. A reception follows at Willow Springs Vineyard, 840 West Lowell Ave., Haverhill. Arrangements are by H.L. Farmer and Sons Funeral Homes and Cremation Service Haverhill and Bradford.
