A Haverhill resident, plus two from Methuen and one from Andover, will be among a crowd of candidates in their respective parties to make the September state primary election ballot for Essex County sheriff.
According to Secretary of the Commonwealth William F. Galvin’s Elections Division, Jeffrey J. Gallo, 22G Forest Acres Drive, Haverhill, joins four other Republicans, including James P. Jajuga Jr. of Methuen, on that party’s ballot for Essex County sheriff. On the Democrat ballot, Methuen resident William Castro will be among six candidates, including Paul L. D. Russell Jr. of Andover, also running for the seat to be vacated by current Sheriff Frank G. Cousins.
Democrat sheriff candidates with nomination papers certified by Galvin’s office are Castro, Russell, Kevin F. Coppinger of Lynn, Michael J. Marks of Lynn, Edward J. O’Reilly of Wenham and Jerry P. Robito of Lawrence. Republican candidates, in addition to Gallo and Jajuga, are Kenneth H. Berg of Danvers, Craig G. Lane of Newburyport and Anne M. Manning-Martin of Peabody.
Ives, Campbell and DiZoglio Face Challengers
Locally, the September runoff for sheriff is the only contested race on the Republican primary ballot. Democrats, in other races, will also decide on party challenges to incumbents Sen. Kathleen A. O’Connor Ives (D-Newburyport), as well as Reps. Diana DiZoglio (D-Methuen) and Linda Dean Campbell (D-Methuen). Haverhill resident Adele F. Martino, 41 Welcome St., is running against O’Connor Ives in the primary, while Phyllis Ann Jones of North Andover will square off against DiZoglio. Campbell, meanwhile, will face Christopher J. Katsoulis of Methuen in the primary.
Democratic Rep. Brian S. Dempsey and Republican Rep. Leonard Mirra of West Newbury will run unopposed.
The state primary election, including the Essex County sheriff runoffs, is to be held Thursday, Sept. 8. The successful nominees of each party will advance to the Tuesday, Nov. 8 general election.
In November, Andover Democratic Sen. Barbara A. L’Italien faces a challenge from Lawrence Republican Susan M. Laplante. In the governor’s council race Democrat Eileen R. Duff of Gloucester will be challenged by Republican Richard A. Baker of West Newbury.
