Firefighters Contain Ayers Village House Fire

A house fire in Haverhill’s Ayers Village kept firefighters busy Wednesday afternoon, but no injuries were reported.

Haverhill fire crews responded to the scene of a fire reported at about 1:24 p.m., Wednesday, in the basement at 8 Village Lane, Haverhill. Additional crews from Methuen and Lawrence assisted on scene while companies from Georgetown, Merrimac and Salem, N.H., provided coverage at Water Street and other fire stations. The fire was extinguished by 1:55 p.m. with “heavy debris” damage, according to Haverhill fire radio communications. A Georgetown ladder unit also provided additional post-fire coverage at the scene. Traffic backups and detours were also reported by observers and fire dispatch along Broadway, route 97, in the Ayers Village area during and after the fire.

As that fire was contained, the crew from Lawrence responded, with mutual aid units from Merrimac and Groveland, to an exterior fire reported at 2:08 p.m., at 11 Arlington St. Investigators reported flames, extinguished a short time later, spread upward from inside a trash barrel to a side of the structure and caused a “minor loss” at that scene.

Minutes later, at 2:10 p.m., the unit from Groveland fire also responded to a reported mulch fire outside Pentucket Medical Associates, 1 Park Way, downtown. Also, Georgetown and Merrimac units assisted with, among other calls, “master box” alarms at 2:14 p.m. and 2:33 p.m., respectively, at YMCA, 81 Winter St. and 6 Highland Ave.

An investigation was ongoing into cause of the Village Lane fire at deadline. Damage estimates and a count of residents displaced by the fire were unknown.  A real estate listing described the dwelling as a 4,032 square foot, 2.5 story single family home valued at $453,243.

WHAV has reached out to Haverhill Fire officials including interim Fire Chief John E. Parow for further comment. However, they were not immediately available.
