Robert T, Strangman, 97, a lifelong resident of Haverhill, died Saturday morning, June 4, at his residence.
He was born Nov. 19, 1918 and was the son of the late Leonard W. and Emma (Rideout) Strangman. He attended Cogswell School and Fox School of Haverhill. He was an Army Veteran of World War II and served from May 7, 1942 to October 14, 1945. He served in England with a medical division of the Army Air Corps 352nd Fighter Group, and received the European African Middle Eastern Theatre Campaign Ribbon and the Distinguished Unit Badge. Strangman worked as a truck driver for many years. He later worked for Franzone Construction as a mason and at Vernon Plastics until his medical retirement. He was a gifted carpenter and it would please him to work on different projects.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Mary Elizabeth (Bixby) Strangman of Haverhill; sons, Bruce T. Strangman of Andover, and Robert E. Strangman of Atkinson, N.H.; daughters, Candy J. Porro and her husband Mark of East Hampstead, N.H., and Bonnie L Pride and her husband Alan from Millis; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. He was the last survivor of 13 children with his siblings being, brothers Leonard, Calvin, William, Alfred, Kenneth and Richard; sisters Ruth Barr, Mary McDonald, Lillian Scamporino, Edna Harvey, Marion Beaupre and Barbara Berube.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours Wednesday, from 5 to 7 p.m., at H.L. Farmer & Sons Funeral Home, 106 Summer St. Haverhill. Funeral services will be on Thursday, 11 a.m., at the funeral home. Interment with military honors follows in Linwood Cemetery, Haverhill. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to your local veteran’s organization.
