What do June 9, 14 and 25 have in common? They’re all food celebrations that include strawberries.

If you love rhubarb and strawberries you’re sure to want to celebrate June 9 National Strawberry-rhubarb pie day with a slice or two. Rhubarb is often called the pie plant as colonist used the red stems to make a strawberry colored pie. Strawberries were added to sweeten the tart flavor of the rhubarb.

And dessert lovers break out the forks once again on June 14 and enjoy some Strawberry shortcake in honor of this holiday. Strawberries have been around for more than two thousand years, but combining it with a pastry to create Strawberry shortcake started around 1847.

And finish off the month celebrating Strawberry Parfait day on June 25. The name of this Parisian dessert – parfait means perfect – and what a perfect treat for a hot summer day.

A bit more information:  Consider growing your own strawberries  to use in these and other desserts.  All you need is a container, hanging basket or a sunny spot in the yard.
