Rain Could Not Wash Away Memories on Memorial Day

While the rainy weather Monday morning may have caused cancellations of some local Memorial Day parades, other observances were moved indoors.

In an address at Haverhill City Hall Auditorium, Mayor James J. Fiorentini asked attendees to “remember and honor our veterans and those who paid the ultimate sacrifice so that we would remain free.”

“We come not to honor war, for war is always an unwelcome visitor. We come to honor those who fought in those wars and died,” Fiorentini said.

At the ceremony, the Hillie Nation Marching Band was also on hand to perform a “military medley” for the audience.

In Methuen, Mayor Stephen N. Zanni was among those at services held inside the American Legion, 200 Broadway.

“Thank you to all of those who gave their lives; and thank you to all of those who are committed to honoring their memories,” Zanni wrote on Facebook.
