As representatives of 39,000 striking Verizon workers continue contract negotiations with the company in Washington D.C. under the watchful eye of the U.S. Labor Secretary, Communication Workers of America Spokeswoman Candice Johnson says the strike is hurting the company’s ability to serve customers while the picket lines remain strong:

“It’s important not only for Verizon families, but it really, we hope can send a message and maybe be the first step in an effort to turn around this continued corporate greed and start to give working people again the acknowledgement and recognition and a path to maintaining the middle class, which is something that working people deserve. Yet, since the meltdown of 2008, we’ve continued to fall further behind and working people know that that’s not right, especially when you’re dealing with such a greedy, profitable corporation as Verizon. Verizon families, members of the Communications Workers of America and the IBEW will keep the picket lines strong one day longer, until we get a fair contract,” Johnson said.
